Rip rap is a top layer of loose, angular stone used for stability and erosion resistance. Rip rap is also commonly used for bank stabilization in river and stream projects. It is important to use a well graded mixture of rock sizes for riprap installation. Before applying rip rap, it is recommended to use a filter material to prevent the underlying soil from moving through the riprap. Rip rap can be made from concrete rubble from paving demolition. It is recommended to make the riprap layer at least two times as thick as the maximum stone diameter for proper design and installation. Cobbles Rip Rap Sizes

3″ Minus: This is a type of crushed stone or gravel that has been screened to remove pieces larger than 3 inches in diameter. It’s often used for road base, sub-base, and general construction purposes. It can also be referred to as ‘shot rock’, a loose, angular stone used for erosion control. Riprap application on ‘steep slopes’ can be challenging, and using chain link fencing or wire mesh can help secure installations.

6″ Rock: Rocks that are approximately 6 inches in size. These can be used for erosion control, landscaping, as a base for larger construction projects, and for gravel roads and shoreline erosion prevention.

9″ Rock: Rocks around 9 inches in diameter, suitable for creating retaining walls, erosion control structures, and larger landscaping features. They are also effective in protecting against ice erosion. These rocks are also used for bank stabilization in river and stream projects.

12″ Rock: Rocks measuring about 12 inches, often used in larger-scale landscaping projects, such as water features, retaining walls, and erosion control. Design recommendations and guidelines to install rip rap for erosion prevention should be followed.

1/4 Ton (18” Rock): Rocks that weigh approximately 1/4 ton and are around 18 inches in diameter. These large rocks are used for substantial structural projects, including retaining walls, large decorative features, and other shoreline structures such as bridge abutments and pilings.

1/2 Ton (24” Rock): Rocks weighing about 1/2 ton and measuring roughly 24 inches in diameter, used for major construction projects, large-scale erosion control, and significant landscaping elements. They are particularly effective to prevent erosion in various applications.

1 Ton (30” Rock): Rocks that weigh around 1 ton and are approximately 30 inches in diameter. They are used in heavy-duty construction, large-scale erosion control, and as prominent landscaping features. They are also used alongside railroad tracks for stabilization.

2 Ton (36” Rock): Very large rocks weighing about 2 tons and around 36 inches in diameter, used in major construction projects, large-scale erosion control, and as significant decorative elements in landscaping. They are also used in creating a retaining wall and stabilizing the earth. Rock armour is a method for shoreline protection and erosion control. Riprap is also used in

Cobbles for Erosion Control

4″-8″ Cobble: Cobbles ranging from 4 to 8 inches in size, used in landscaping for decorative purposes, water features, and erosion control. These cobbles are also effective for slope protection in landscaping projects.

8″-12″ Cobble: Cobbles measuring between 8 and 12 inches, often used in larger landscaping projects, such as dry stream beds, water features, and decorative ground cover.

12″-24″ Cobble: Large cobbles between 12 and 24 inches in size, suitable for significant decorative
